Crowning Glory: Dental Crowns

Crowns are a type of cosmetic restoration that are used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. They are typically used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially damaged by tooth decay.

When a crown is placed, it is cemented onto an existing tooth and covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line. Essentially, the crown becomes the new outer surface of the tooth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or a combination of both. Porcelain crowns are often preferred because they closely resemble the color and translucency of natural teeth and are very durable.

Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are necessary when there is not enough tooth strength remaining to support a filling. Unlike fillings, which are applied directly into the mouth, a crown is created outside of the mouth. Your unique tooth impression is used to fabricate the crown in a dental lab, allowing a technician to assess all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. The crown is then custom-made to ensure that your bite and jaw movements function properly once the crown is placed.
